About
Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law at SIMAD University is a dynamic academic unit dedicated to the advancement of legal education, research, and service in Somalia and the broader East African region. Its establishment was a long-standing aspiration of the University’s leadership, shaped through rigorous consultation with legal scholars and practitioners, and driven by the growing demand for qualified legal professionals in both the public and private sectors.
Officially inaugurated in September 2012, the Faculty of Law has since emerged as a cornerstone of SIMAD University’s academic offerings. Over the past decade, the Faculty has successfully graduated ten cohorts of law students who are now contributing meaningfully to Somalia’s legal system, governance institutions, and civil society. It is now widely recognized as one of the leading legal education institutions in East Africa, noted for its commitment to excellence, innovation, and the integration of legal theory with practical, real-world application.

The Faculty actively promotes legal research through a dedicated Publications section on its website, highlighting the scholarly outputs of its academic staff. Faculty members supervise student research projects aligned with their areas of specialization, including constitutional law, criminal law, international law, commercial and corporate law, human rights, and comparative legal studies. The Faculty also encourages research collaboration and ensures access to essential academic resources, strengthening the quality and impact of legal scholarship.
The Faculty regularly updates its curricula to remain aligned with contemporary legal developments and professional standards. Emphasis is placed on practical legal skills, analytical thinking, ethical reasoning, advocacy and leadership development, as well as the integration of legal research tools and digital technologies.
